  Overview of Women and Information Technology in South Africa

  • Women constitute 17% of the total Internet users.
  • 51% Female Secondary School Enrollment
  • 48% of all Tertiary Level Students are Women, but only 6% of all Women in South Africa graduate from Tertiary Institutions
  • 9% of Engineering Graduates are Women
  • 33% of Technikon Permanent Educators are Women
  • 31% of Permanent Staff in Universities are Female
  • Overall, women make up between 26-28% of IT employees.
  • Women comprise only 18.65% of data communications and networking jobs.
  • The average annual salary for females was R103,793 ($13,711) compared to R130,671 ($17,261) for males.

Gender Policy Framework

  • Department of Communications’ Gender, Youth and Disability Desk activities include Training programs on awareness in respect of Gender, Youth and Disability (GY&D) for the Department’s personnel.
  • The South African government’s macro-level policies have been successful in causing schools and employers to target women in their enrollment and recruitment.

Non-government Gender & IT Activities

  • The Women’sNET directory of women’s organizations’ activities include providing Internet training for women and developing regional technical support centers in South Africa.
  • South African Women in Science and Engineering (SA – WISE) works to lobby the advancement of women in science and engineering, and to provide leadership and role models for young people wishing to enter the fields of science and engineering.
