Targeted Academies:
  • Honam University
  • Dongguk University
  • Konkuk University

Enrollment Figures (% of females in the Cisco Networking Academy Program, as of 2001):

  • Honam University: 46%
  • Dongguk University: 50%
  • Konkuk University: 30%

Recruitment & Retention Strategies

  • Some job placement support is offered to students by liaising with employers
  • At Dongguk, 50% of the Academy Program instructors are female
  • Advertisements posted around school promote the program to students in general

Constraints/Challenges

  • Job opportunities and salaries for male and female graduates in Korean IT sector are not equal

Recommendations

  • Hire more female professors
  • Provide scholarships
  • Government support to improve women’s career opportunities in the IT sector
  • Offer the Networking Academy program in non-engineering departments
  • Provide more job placement support to raise employers’ awareness of women’s skills
