Overview of Women and Information Technology in the Philippines

  • Philippine women outnumber men as users of the Internet
  • Women are comparatively well-represented in science and technology academic programs and occupations
  • Women’s enrollment in science and technology is about 35% and about 79% in the health sciences.
  • 53% of scientists and engineers are women
  • Stereotypes about networking as a male-oriented occupation still exist, and job announcements for networkers continue to indicate a preference for men.

Gender Policy Framework

  • The Philippines Government has several progressive policies to support women’s economic and political participation. Examples include a law promoting the integration of women in national development, legislation providing women equal opportunities in military school education, and a law against sexual harassment in employment, education and training.
