ROMANIA
Overview of Women and Information Technology in Romania

  • Romanian women’s high level of education is indicated by a 96% female adult literacy rate and 74% secondary school enrollment.
  • Women were usually the first to be laid off and felt most significantly the cuts in health services and child care
  • Women currently constitute 45.2% of the work force and represent 56% of all employees in the professional and technical careers.
  • Women have a higher rate of unemployment than men, occupy few influential positions in the private sector, and earn lower average wages
  • An unstable economy has resulted in fewer government funds to support research and development and education and training.

Gender Policy Framework

  • In 1996, the Government created a department in the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection to advance women's concerns and family policies and targets resources to train women for skilled professions.
