  Overview of Women and Information Technology in the Russian Federation


  • 34.3% of female tertiary students are studying natural sciences
  • As of 1997, women made up 46.9% of the labor force in Russia and 45% of the country’s unemployed.
  • 90.7% of girls are enrolled in secondary school
  • 57% of secondary school students are female
  • 53 % of tertiary students are female
  • 34.3% of female Tertiary students are enrolled in the Natural Sciences
  • 98.8% of adult females are literate
  • 38% of Russia’s Internet users are Women

Gender Policy Framework

  • Article 19 of the new Russian constitution states, “men and women have equal rights and freedoms and equal opportunities to realize them.” However, the Constitution is not widely enforced.
