CANADA STRATEGY REPORT
  Cisco Networking Academy Program in Canada

Targeted Academies:
  • Marymount Academy
  • College de Limoilou
  • Chilliwack Sr. Secondary School

Enrollment Figures (% of females in the Cisco Networking Academy Program, as of 2001):

  • Marymount Academy: 100%
  • College de Limoilou: 3%
  • Chilliwack Sr. Secondary School: 40%

Recruitment & Retention Strategies

  • Promote Program through school’s Web site, newspaper, and announcements
  • Include images of female role models in advertisements
  • Presentations to high school students, targeting females
  • Organize career fairs & involve female Academy program students
  • Promote the Academy program in parent meetings
  • Program is offered in Computer Science department, where there is a high female enrollment

Constraints/Challenges

  • Students have less time to take the Cisco course because it is an elective course
  • College reputation may discourage female enrollment

Recommendations

  • Discuss gender issues with CATC training
  • Additional support through a LISTSERV would be beneficial
